Tutorial: Knitted Hand Warmers

I wanted some really simple hand warmers, but I wasn’t able to find a pattern that I liked. To solve the problem I made up my own. Here are my instructions to make some really simple hand warmers, there are three sizes Small (Medium, Large).

  • Double knitting yarn
  • 4mm knitting needles
  • yarn needle for sewing up
  • tape measure

Cast on 35 (40, 45) stitches. Leave a long end as you can sew the hand warmer up with it

Knit 17 rows in K1 P1 rib

Work approximately 35 rows in stocking stitch. Knit the first and last stitch on purl rows as this will stop the edges from curling too much

Work 8 rows in rib as before

Cast off in rib, leaving a long end to sew up with

Sew up from the short rib end for approximately 5cm. Finish off and weave in the ends

Sew up from the long rib end until there is a gap of 6cm left. Finished off and weave the ends in

Make a second one exactly the same

This pattern is really simple and therefore easy to adapt, you can knit more or less rib and increase the length of the hand warmers by knitting  as many rows of stocking stitch as you want.
